Wood waste and the RET: certification standard

 Certification is not required in the wood waste provisions of the RET bill given the strict definition of wood waste as a by-product of normal harvesting and processing operations and stringent requirements for such biomass to be sourced from areas based on ecologically sustainable management and Commonwealth, State and Territory approval processes.  Certification is a voluntary scheme used in the market to demonstrate and verify sustainability in accordance with independent standards. Imposing certification conditions in the RET would introduce additional compliance costs, particularly for smaller private forest managers.
